Designated as Colorado’s only National Wild and Scenic River, the Poudre boasts:

How close is white water rafting to Rocky Mountain National Park?
While rafting doesn’t happen inside the park’s boundaries, some of the best white water rafting in Colorado takes place just over an hour from Rocky Mountain National Park’s east entrance. The Cache la Poudre River flows through Roosevelt National Forest, offering stunning scenery and access to wild, fast-moving water without the crowds. The drive itself is a scenic experience, and the transition from alpine trails to canyon rapids sets the tone for a truly unforgettable day.
Do I need previous rafting experience?
Not at all.
Our trips are designed for a wide range of experience levels. Whether you’ve rafted many times or this is your very first time in a raft, we’ve got a trip that fits. Our Taste of Whitewater adventure is perfect for beginners, kids, and anyone who prefers a gentler float. For those ready for more thrills, the Blast of Whitewater brings bigger waves and more action, but you still don’t need prior experience to join. Your guide will walk you through everything you need to know.
What ages can go white water rafting?
Most trips are open to kids ages 7 and up, depending on river conditions and water levels at the time of your trip.
We take safety seriously, so if high water creates more advanced conditions, we may raise the minimum age for certain trips. If you’re unsure whether your child can join, give us a call. We’re happy to help you choose the right adventure for your family.
What’s the difference between the Taste of Whitewater and the Blast of Whitewater?
The Taste of Whitewater trip is a scenic and moderately adventurous ride through Class II and Class III rapids. You’ll paddle through beautiful canyon stretches, get splashed and enjoy a steady rhythm that’s perfect for first-timers and families.
The Blast of Whitewater is more intense. Expect powerful Class III and IV rapids like Pine View Falls and Cardiac Corner. This trip is all about adrenaline, big waves, and lots of high-fives. It’s ideal for adventure-seekers, groups, or anyone wanting to push the energy up a notch.
What should I wear?
Dress for comfort and water. We recommend:
● Quick-drying clothes (like swimsuits or synthetic shirts)
● Secure shoes that can get wet (no flip-flops or Crocs)
● Sunglasses with a retainer strap.
● A full change of clothes for after the trip
We provide helmets, life jackets, and paddles. If you’re not sure what to pack, we’re happy to help you plan.
How long is each trip?
The Taste of Whitewater lasts around 2 hours on the water, while the Blast of Whitewater typically runs 3 hours, not including check-in and transportation time. We recommend setting aside about 3-4 hours total to allow for orientation, gear-up, and your drive back to base.
Do you run trips in the rain?
Yes, we run trips rain or shine! In fact, rafting in the rain can be an incredible experience. Since you’re getting wet anyway, a light rain doesn’t change much.
Is rafting dangerous?
Rafting is an adventure sport, and like all outdoor activities, there are risks. That said, we take every precaution to minimize them. Our guides are professionally trained in river safety and certified in CPR and First Aid. All guests receive a full safety orientation before getting in the raft, and we provide top-of-the-line gear.
We also choose the right trip and route based on your group’s comfort level and the current river conditions. Thousands of guests raft with us each year, and we’re proud of our long-standing safety record.
Can I bring a phone or camera on the raft?
We recommend leaving valuables, phones, and non-waterproof cameras at base camp or in your vehicle. The river is a rough place for electronics, and it’s easy for items to get lost, soaked, or damaged. We have photographers capturing moments during trips, and those photos can be purchased afterward.
What about medical concerns or physical limitations?
If you or someone in your group has a medical condition, injury, or mobility concern, let us know when booking. Many guests with physical limitations enjoy rafting, but every situation is different. We’re happy to discuss the details and help you determine if a rafting trip is a good fit.
As a general rule, you’ll need to be able to sit in a raft, paddle, and hold onto the safety lines when directed.
What’s included with my rafting trip?
Your trip includes:
● Safety gear (helmet, life jacket, paddle)
● Transportation from check-in to the river and back
● Certified, friendly guides
● A pre-trip orientation and safety talk
● Optional trip photos available for purchase
You’ll also have access to restrooms and changing areas at our base location.
Can I book a private group trip or event?
Absolutely! We regularly host private groups, corporate outings, family reunions, and bachelor/bachelorette parties. Whether you’re celebrating something or just want to keep your group together, we can arrange a private raft or customize an entire trip for your crew. Call ahead to talk through your group’s size, timing, and goals.
When is the best time of year to go rafting?
The rafting season typically runs from mid-May through August, depending on snowpack and river flow. Early season trips in May and June tend to feature faster water from snowmelt, making them ideal for thrill-seekers. July and August offer warmer days, more stable river levels, and great conditions for families or beginners.
What makes rafting the Cache la Poudre River special?
The Cache la Poudre is Colorado’s only designated National Wild and Scenic River, and it shows. This protected status means you’ll raft through untouched wilderness, with no dams interrupting the natural flow and no development cluttering the views. It’s raw, rugged, and real.
Plus, unlike more crowded rivers like the Arkansas, the Poudre offers a more personal experience. Fewer outfitters are permitted here, and that means more time enjoying the river and less time waiting in line to launch.
